Recently I wrote about how it became normal for most writers to create a free writing course to get subscribers. I’m not fond of that idea as most of those courses are not worth you permitting them to someone to occupy your inbox and time. You can read it here.

The entire thing sparked my creativity and made me brainstorm about other types of lead magnets writers could use to collect email addresses and I came up with seven ideas.

Before I start listing ideas, I should mention tools you can use to create them: Canva (free plan), Google slides, PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator — whatever works for you.

1. Daily writing schedule

As someone who loves using planners and who creates planners, this is the easiest thing to create and the most helpful for users. A lot of people have trouble staying productive during the day and don’t know when the hours went. This is a simple yet effective tool anyone could use.

It doesn’t have to be overly complicated, just think about what would you as a writer like to have before you when planning your day and make that.

2. Editing checklist

Another easy-to-make yet helpful tool for every writer. There are certain steps we all take when editing a story before pitching it to publications, putting them together in a one-page document, and start collecting emails.

3. Niche finder worksheet

This is something many new writers are struggling with and something senior writers like to advise newbies. Having a few-page worksheet to guide someone through finding a niche would make everyone’s lives much easier. It’s a bit more complicated to create as you need to think through and carefully assemble questions so it’s understandable to everyone.

4. X steps to write perfectly about me story

I’m sure you’ve noticed that a lot of senior writers have an “About me” story pinned at top of their profile page. Just like the “About me” page on your blog, this one should be written carefully and with a certain purpose. Think about what makes a good “About me” story and put it in the one-page document and there is your lead magnet.

5. A quick-start guide to Medium

This would be a document of a few pages, up to 5 pages including cover and your info — so 3 pages to think about. Any new writer would like to have something like this to be able to refer to when starting on Medium rather than searching and digging through the platform.

6. Roadmap to your first _______ on Medium

We see that a lot of new writers are struggling to get to 100 followers and enroll in Medium Partner Program. Some writers are pondering on how to get referrals or how to earn the first $100 on Medium. Here’s your opportunity to spill some “secrets” and share your expertise. It also doesn’t have to be a large document, 5 pages are more than enough.

7. Stat tracker

Another thing most Medium writers worry about are stats so why not help them track their stats easier by making a stat tracker. This can be an overall stat tracker or for a single story — you decide. It shouldn’t be too complicated to create.
